Since 1995, The Saturday Academy for Positive Self- Development  has been involved in students/families lives creating harmony and respectful relationships that create a community for respecting everyone. The Saturday Academy works as ombudsmen between the school, the parent, the judicial system and the student primarily as advocates, facilitators and presenters.  The goal of the Academy is to be a positive force to help decrease violence, crime, and inappropriate behavior in an effort to strengthen the family.

The five cornerstones of the program are Education, Empowerment, Encouragement, Inspiration and Support.  The most important factor of the program is parents attending with their children.

Parental involvement is a strong component in which parents can help support their children’s development at home while the school can be used as an additional resource. Although it is important for all parents to be involved in their children’s education, it is particularly critical to develop a strong link between the home and the school.

We all deserve to be free from the destructive forces of violence...

improving  family life,  COMMUNITY knowledge and understanding OF WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE!

The program is designed to connect school to student’s lives as follows:

            ◈ Teach through conversation

◈ Listen to student talk about familiar topics, such as home and community

◈ Respond to students’ talk and questions, making on-the-spot changes that

               directly relate to their comments

◈ Assist language development through modeling, eliciting, probing, restating,

clarifying, questioning and praising as appropriate in purposeful conversation

◈ Interact with students in ways that respect their speaking style, which may be

different from the teacher’s such as paying attention to wait-time, eye contact,

               turn talking, and spotlighting

◈ Connect student language with literacy and content area knowledge through

speaking, listening, reading and writing activities

◈ Encourages students to use content vocabulary to express their understanding

◈ Provide frequent opportunities for students to interact with each other and with

               the teacher during instructional activities
